How important is clean water to your health?

As you know, I've been pretty outspoken when it comes to the contamination of our drinking water and the importance of using only distilled water. Over the years, I've covered research concerning the estrogen-like chemical pesticides reaching our groundwater and their direct relationship to the increase in female breast cancer. I've described how chlorinated drinking water has been shown to be the primary cause of bladder cancer. And I've uncovered the frightening truth about the high levels of lead in school water supplies and their link to permanent behavioral problems and learning disabilities in our children.
Just when I thought I'd heard the worst about the dangers of our drinking water, I got a call from a research scientist detailing even greater horrors, which leads me to ask the question; do you remember when you were a kid and stood in the rain trying to catch raindrops on your tongue? It's definitely not a good idea anymore.
Stephen Muller, a chemist at the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, reported that much of rainwater today is contaminated with crop pesticides. It seems that common pesticides like atrazine, alachlor, and others evaporate after being applied to crop fields and then combine with the water vapor in clouds. When the vapor falls as rain, the pesticides come right back down to Earth, but this time they're not just in the fields. They're everywhere. These pesticides are particularly concentrated in rain that falls a few minutes after crops have been sprayed; so concentrated, in fact, that it would
be illegal to supply this rain as drinking water.
In the European Union and Switzerland, laws require that drinking water contain no more that 100 nanograms of pesticides per liter of water. In their tests of rain samples from 41 different storms, nine contained more that 100 nanograms of atrazine (a common herbicide) per liter, one had 900 nanograms and one had 4,000 nanograms per liter of 2,4-dinitrophenol (another common pesticide). The problem isn't just limited to Europe or Switzerland.
Genetically Engineered Rain
Research conducted in Sweden linked pesticide exposure to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma—one of the most rapidly increasing cancers in Western countries. The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has risen by 73% since 1973 in the United States alone. The Swedish researchers found that both Americans and Europeans who contracted the cancer were 2.3 times more likely to have been exposed to the herbicide glyphosate than individuals who never developed the cancer. The researchers report that glyphosate and other common pesticides suppress the immune system and trigger the formation of cancer.
For those who may not be avid farmers or gardeners, let me give you some background. Glyphosates are nonselective, systemic chemicals used in popular weed killers like Roundup. They kill plants from the inside-out by preventing them from making food through photosynthesis. But because glyphosates kill indiscriminately farmers can't just spray them across their fields or they'll lose precious crops along with the weeds. For this reason, Monsanto created what they referred to as "Roundup-Ready" seeds. These are patented crop seeds genetically modified to withstand high doses of glyphosate that would otherwise destroy them along with weeds. Based on the popularity of these seeds, it looks like we'll continue to see more glyphosate in our rain and drinking water—and based on this recent European research, we'll be seeing a lot more cases of lymphoma and other illnesses linked to pesticide exposure.
So now we have genetically modified rain to grow genetically modified crops. No wonder scientists want to genetically modify people. At least they're consistent. I just wonder if scientists couldn't be genetically modified so they wouldn't want to genetically modify everything else anymore. That's one modification I'd consider endorsing.
By-the-Way... "No to Chlorine!"
Every time I talk about the dangers of drinking water, I get several letters saying that our chlorinated drinking water is some of the best in the world. Let me make a few points on this subject:
· First, chlorine offers no protection whatsoever against pesticides (such as Roundup and the others I discussed above) or viruses or other non-bacterial contaminants.
· Second, chlorine breaks down into a compound called trihalomethane which has been linked to increased cancer rates and a higher risk of stillbirth in pregnant mothers (Epidemilogy 99;10:23-237).
· The only benefit to adding chlorine to drinking water is to eliminate harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. Which brings me to my third point: Research data suggest that chlorine isn't 100% effective on the bacteria front, either.
For some time the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been implicated in practically every ailment of the gastrointestinal tract, including ulcers, stomach inflammation, and even cancer. The fact that at least half of all individuals have H. pylori naturally living in their guts makes it appear to be the likely culprit in these ailments. But until recently no one has been able to find an external reservoir for the bacteria. Researchers in Scotland recently informed us that H. pylori can be found thriving in the sticky biofilm that naturally develops inside water pipes.
Chlorine passing through water pipes only kills the top layer of bacteria. As the chlorine gets used up in the process, live H. pylori bacteria from lower layers of the biofilm get washed away into the water, either in small amounts or large clumps. The problem may be even worse in unchlorinated water coming from private wells.
Distill My Heart, Distill
If you have any gastrointestinal problems whatsoever, it would be worth your while to switch to distilled water. In fact that recommendation goes for everyone, regardless of your current health status, or even the quality of your local water supply. Years ago, I suggested various purification methods based on certain factors such as proximity to agricultural communities. But the research on "cloud pollution" and high levels of pesticides in rainwater has rendered locally specific contaminants a thing of the past. You may not live near any farmers using Roundup-Ready seeds and Roundup, but I would strongly suspect you're living with Roundup (glyphosate)-tainted water...
I've been recommending distillation for many years and today I feel more strongly than ever that it's the only way to go when it comes to purifying your water. There is no other method that removes all types of contaminants and leaves you with water the way nature intended: two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. Water just doesn't get any purer than that.
