Protective Effects Of Anti-Aging DHEA

DHEA is a natural occurring steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland that steadily declines with some people, early in adulthood. It is a precursor to the male sex hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen. Blood levels of DHEA and its sulfate, DHEA-S, begin dropping in some people in their mid-twenty's. The drop in these levels can be as much as 50% by the time they are in there fifties. Recent clinical studies on dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) suggest potential health benefits of this dietary supplement in men and women with age-related decreases in DHEA levels. In one study, DHEA was administered at 50mg/d for 6 months. This randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial included 56 subjects between the ages of 65 and 78 years. DHEA was shown to reduce abdominal fat and insulin resistance, two risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease. In another study, 20 healthy postmenopausal women who were not using hormone-replacement therapy were given a daily dosage of 25mg of DHEA for one year. DHEA increased hormone levels toward premenopausal levels. Furthermore, DHEA supplementation resulted in improved scores obtained from a menopausal symptoms questionnaire. DHEA should be taken with medical supervision as requirement may vary among individuals and only a health care professional can determine whether supplementation is appropriate.

DHEA is short for dehydroepiandrosterone (D-hi-dro-epp-E-an-dro-ster-own), a natural occuring steroid hormone made by the adrenal glands located just above the kidneys. Scientists have known about this hormone since 1934. More than 150 hormones are made by the adrenal glands. However, the most abundant hormone made by the adrenal glands is DHEA. After DHEA is made by these glands it goes into the bloodstream, and from then on it travels all over the body and goes into our cells where it is converted into male hormones, known as androgens, and female hormones, known as estrogens. Small amounts of DHEA are also made in the brain by neurons (brain cells).
